America Media is the sponsor of the annual Foley Poetry Award, given in honor of William T. Foley, M.D. Since 1988 the contest has been awarding a cash prize and a publication in the print edition of America to the winner of each year contest. Submission for the 2021 edition of the poetry contest is ongoing. If you have a poem you believe can win you a thousand bucks, submit it before the contest closes.
“I imagine we will keep getting a bundle of poems sent in every year. And thank God. Sometimes poems tell the truth about the world better than anything else can,” Hoover wrote in 2018.
- Each entrant is asked to submit one poem of 45 lines or fewer for consideration.
- The submitted poem should be written in English.
- Only unpublished poems not under consideration elsewhere will be considered.
- Poems may address any topic.
- Submissions must be received before 11:59 p.m. ET on April 1, 2020.
- Please submit no more than one poem.
Entries may be submitted by Submittable or by postal mail to:

Each year approximately 1,000 poems are submitted. The poetry editor and judge for this contest is Joseph Hoover, S.J. The winning poet will be required to sign a letter of agreement with America Media, publisher of America. Under this agreement, the poet will have the right to sell or republish his/her poem after it is published. It also gives to America Media the right to republish or allow others to republish the poem in any form.
